How Do I Check LLC Name Availability in California?

Search the California Secretary of State's business database free at https://bizfileonline.sos.ca.gov/search/business. Your LLC name must include "LLC," "L.L.C.," or "Limited Liability Company" and be distinguishable from existing records under Cal. Corp. Code § 17701.08. If available, reserve the name for 60 days by paying $10.

Using the Secretary of State Search Tool

Visit https://bizfileonline.sos.ca.gov/search/business and enter your proposed LLC name. The search is instant and free. Results show all registered business entities on file. If your exact name or a confusingly similar name already exists, it's unavailable. If no conflicts appear, your name is available to use.

Name Requirements

Your LLC name must end with "LLC," "L.L.C.," or "Limited Liability Company" (Cal. Corp. Code § 17701.08). The name must be distinguishable on Secretary of State records—meaning no identical or deceptively similar names can already be registered.

Restricted Words

Do not use Bank, Trust, Insurance, Corporation, or Inc. in your LLC name (Cal. Corp. Code § 17701.08). These terms are reserved for specific entity types. If your desired name contains restricted words, contact the Secretary of State at (916) 657-5448 before filing.

Reserving Your Name

If your search shows availability and you need time before filing your Articles of Organization, reserve the name for $10 through the Secretary of State's online system. The reservation lasts 60 days and prevents others from registering an identical name.

DBA Filing Requirement

If you operate under a name different from your LLC's legal name, file a Doing Business As (DBA) statement with your county clerk for $26. This is required even if your LLC name is available—the DBA is a separate filing at the county level.
