Check LLC Name Availability in Delaware

Q: How do I check if my Delaware LLC name is available?

A: Use the free online name search tool at https://icis.corp.delaware.gov/Ecorp/EntitySearch/NameSearch.aspx operated by the Delaware Division of Corporations. Your proposed name must be distinguishable on the Division's records and include a required designator (LLC, L.L.C., or Limited Liability Company). Restricted words like "Bank," "University," or "Insurance" require special approval under 6 Del. C. § 18-102.

How to Search

Visit the Delaware Division of Corporations' name search portal at https://icis.corp.delaware.gov/Ecorp/EntitySearch/NameSearch.aspx. The search is free, real-time, and available 24/7. Enter your proposed LLC name to check against all registered entities in Delaware.

Your name is available only if it is distinguishable on the Division's records—meaning no existing business has an identical or confusingly similar name under 6 Del. C. § 18-102.

Name Requirements

Your LLC name must include one of these required designators:

  • LLC
  • L.L.C.
  • Limited Liability Company

Certain words are prohibited without special approval, including "Bank," "University," and "Insurance." Verify your proposed name doesn't contain these restricted terms before proceeding.

Reserve Your Name (Optional)

If your search confirms availability, you can reserve the name for 120 days by paying a $75 reservation fee through the Division of Corporations. This protects your chosen name while you prepare your Certificate of Formation.

After Formation

Once your LLC is formed, remember that a DBA (Doing Business As) filing is required if you operate under a name different from your registered LLC name. File the DBA with the County Prothonotary in each county where you conduct business.
